The Howard County Health Department will soon be under new leadership. Current Administrator Sheila Wallace, RN, will leave her post on Friday.
Wallace has been with the health department here since April of 2004. In mid-June, she announced to the county commission her decision to retire.
During her time here, the health department has seen significant upgrades to its infrastructure, many of which were paid for by grants at no cost to the county. Wallace credits her staff for the hard work that takes place in the department. “There are so many things behind the scenes that nobody sees,” she explained.
Wallace said she loves the mission of the health department and feels good about her time here. “I am honored to have served the county.”
Wallace originally hails from Cape Girardeau, Mo., and graduated from Southeast Missouri State University there. She received her health commission in 1974 and became an RN in 1977. Before coming to Howard County, she spent five hears at Home Health in Cooper County.
The county is still accepting applications for a new administrator. Michelle Reynolds, RN, will take over in the interim until the position is filled. Wallace said she will help acclimate the new administrator once hired in order to provide for a smooth transition.
