Wells offers unique home workout class

Posted

While Fayette residents are spending more time at home with schools closing and restaurants moving to take-out and delivery, Mackenzie Wells has created a fun way to improve your health while spending time at home.

Wells has been teaching fitness classes for women at Get Bent Fitness on the square in Fayette for six years, but recently decided to expand her business. She started creating unique 28-minute workout videos that members can access online.  She officially launched the new program on March 1st.

In the past, Wells has offered classes at Get Bent Fitness three days a week, however, she’s been wanting to expand to online classes for quite some time.

“I’ve always wanted to offer something that you can access online, do at your own convenience,” she said. “Monday through Friday, I upload a new workout video.  We cover the full body each week.”

Each day covers a different set of muscle groups and Wells continually changes up the programming to keep the workouts new and exciting.

“It helps that the workouts are always different,” Wells said.

“Members don’t know much about the set up of the workout besides the muscle groups we’re working that day.  They login, press play and each day we do a new and challenging workout together.

“According to the feedback I’m getting, they also really enjoy the variety of music playlists I have going in the background.”

Despite the fact that members are often working out by themselves, the community aspect of the group is another unique feature of the program. Wells uploads the videos to a private Facebook group, where members comment and encourage each other daily.

“This group of women are so fun and supportive, it creates an atmosphere that we are in this together, doing these workouts together,” Wells explained. “I teach like these ladies are right next to me.  Explaining each move, offering modifications, kind of comes natural after teaching in person for six years.”

Members can certainly do these workouts in a gym, but they are designed to be done at home, according to Wells. Her workouts are high intensity interval training, combining both bodyweight and dumbbell exercises, cardio and strength exercises.

“I tell people my workouts are ‘Jillian Michaels meets P90X’ which only mean anything if you know the two of those programs.”

Wells is a certified group fitness instructor and certified personal trainer through the American Council on Exercise.

While the program is effective for weight loss, that is not a focus for Wells.

“I don’t care about the scale,” she said. “What’s going to happen is: you’re going to get stronger, your energy is going to improve, your body is going to move better and feel better, and because of the combination of HIIT training and weightlifting, your metabolism is going to increase.”

“I don’t make losing weight a primary focus, but if you have weight to lose and you’re consistent, you’re going to lose it.”

The $28/month membership also includes meal plans.

“If you commit to those 30 minutes of exercise and eat a little better, you will see results. You don’t have to completely overhaul your diet or lifestyle,” Wells said.

So far, the response to the new classes has been overwhelmingly positive. Wells had hoped to have 60 sign up by March 31. She had 80 sign up by March 1 and is currently at 95 members, many from Howard County.

“It’s exceeded my expectations, everyone is loving it,” she said.
