Winter storm sweeps across US

FAYETTE WAS TRANSFORMED INTO A WINTER WONDERLAND on Sunday as a massive winter storm swept across the US from the Rocky Mountains to the east coast. Fayette received around seven inches of snow, although that was a difficult measurement as high wind gusts caused snow to drift. Schools poised to return from winter break were forced to call of classes Tuesday due to treacherous roadways. Central Methodist cancelled the first day of classes of the spring semester. The Howard County Courthouse and Keller Building, along with the Fayette City Hall were closed on Monday. The New Franklin Tournament postponed its games until Wednesday (see brackets on Page 6). Despite sleet, freezing rain, and snow, no power outages were reported in Fayette or by Howard Electric Cooperative. State, county, and local road crews were out plowing streets and roadways. The sounds of snow shovels and windshield scrapers were heard all over town.
