Another no-hitter for Johnico and Central softball

Posted

On Sunday, the Central Methodist softball team swept a doubleheader against the Missouri Valley Vikings, 10-2 and 8-0. While that in itself is quite a feat, the real story was the third no-hitter in four starts thrown in the second game by freshman Mykala Johnico.

The 5’8” Topeka, Kansas native has appeared in eight games overall and now boasts a 4-0 record with one save. Johnico has struck out 63 batters and walked only eight in 35 innings, and has allowed only eight hits. Her earned run average sits at 0.40.

In the first game on Sunday, MoValley jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on the strength of a two-run home run by first baseman Raven Bass. Central cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame when senior left fielder Kelli Gorman singled to center to drive in sophomore Kelena Oots.

Central tied the game at two in the bottom of the third when senior Madison Love hit a sacrifice fly to right to drive in sophomore shortstop Madison White.

In the top of the fourth, Love held the Vikings scoreless for the third straight inning. That was not so, however for Viking pitching in the bottom of the inning when Central bats came alive for eight runs.

Central held MoValley again in the top of the fifth to earn the 10-2 win.

Gorman led the Eagle attack with three hits including a double and an RBI. Junior Katelyn Kiser posted a double and a single for two runs batted in. White also had two hits and two runs batted in. Both of White’s RBI came on a home run to center in the fourth.

Love, freshman Daly Garland, sophomore Micaela Harcrow, and freshman Lauren Hill each contributed one hit apiece.

Love went the distance in the circle for Central, giving up six hits while striking out four and walking three.

In the nightcap, Central put up four in the first and four in the sixth to pick up the 8-0 win.

White notched two doubles and a single with two runs batted in, while Gorman had a double and a single and drove in a run. Harcrow added a double and a single and drove in two. Garland also drove in two with a double and a single while Love singled in a run. Senior Macey Harrington singled and freshman Abbie Marshall doubled to finish up the Eagle hits.

The two wins pushed the Eagle record to 13-4. Central travels to Atchison, Kansas today to take on Benedictine in a doubleheader. The first pitch is at 1 p.m.
