Ball pitches another gem, CMU improves to 4-1

Fayette native and Central Methodist sophomore Jordyn Ball keeps racking up the strikeouts. Two days after pitching a no-hitter against McPherson, CMU’s ace pitcher retired 11 batters on strikes as the Lady Eagles eased past Bellevue (Neb.) with a 5-1 victory at Cox Softball Complex on Sunday.

Ball allowed just one earned run on six hits and issued two walks in a complete-game performance on Sunday.

Ball is now 3-0 in three starts this season.

Offensively, the Central Methodist lineup powered its way to a win with four extra-base hits. The big hit was delivered by sophomore Kaysie Jolley, who smashed a home run over the right field fence. Sophomore Madison Roberts delivered an RBI-triple in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Joely Crider laid down an RBI-double in the first, and junior Daly Garland drove in a run with a double in the bottom of the second.

Central took a two-run lead after two innings before allowing the Bruins’ only run of the game in the top of the third. Bellevues’s Katie Cunningham drove in Atiana Rodriguez on a single to center field to make it a one-run game.

Bellevue would never again cross the plate as Ball and the CMU defense quieted the Bruins’ bats.

Ball struck out two batters in each of the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings and fanned one batter in the sixth. The defense gobbled up three groundouts and a popout to completely shut down the Bellevue offense in the final four innings.

Central struck out just three times and left four runners on base. First baseman Elizabeth Palumbo led CMU with the only multi-hit game. She finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Jolley finished 1-for-3 with a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth. Crider went 1-for-2 with an RBI-double in the first inning and scored one run. Shortstop Madison Roberts went 1-for-3 with an RBI-triple in the third and scored a run.

Second baseman Madison White finished with one hit, an RBI-single, in three at-bats. Right fielder Garland went 1-for-3 with an RBI-double in the second.

Sunday’s game concluded a three-game home stand in which CMU won all three games. The Lady Eagles head to Columbus, Georgia, on Friday to play six games in three days in the NFCA Leadoff Classic. They don’t return home until Thursday, March 7, for a double-header against St. Mary.
