Higbee senior Ernie Boggs only took three innings on Thursday to do what normally takes other high school pitchers seven.
Going against the combined Bucklin/Macon County team Boggs needed only 25 pitches to throw a no-hitter against his opponent. Despite walking the leadoff hitter in the third inning, Boggs still faced the minimum nine batters as the walk was erased when the next batter hit a sharp grounder to the right of freshman first baseman Will Spilman who fired to freshman shortstop Derek Rockett, who then threw back to Spilman for the 3-6-3 double play.
In order to get the no-hitter in three innings, Boggs’ teammates needed to give him more than just defensive help. And that they did, scoring 16 runs in three innings, causing the game to be called due to the MSHSAA’s 15-run rule. Needing only seven hits to gain the 16 runs, the Tigers were paced by Derek Rockett’s doubles. Junior Luke Ritter doubled and scored three runs while Boggs helped himself by going 1-1 and scoring two runs. Sophomore Will Grimsley was 1-2, scoring two runs. Freshman Jaxon Hudson scored two runs on one hit. Senior Brett Nauerth was one-for-two and scored one run.
The win moved Higbee to 4-5 on the year. That, coupled with a loss the following day, took their record to 4-6.
In other local baseball news, Fayette lost three games in the Russellville tournament losing three games bring their season record to 2-12. With a win against Brookfield, Glasgow improved their record to 3-5. Harrisburg lost to Russellville, dropping the Bulldogs to 5-8 on the year. New Franklin, on a five-game winning streak, defeated Westran 22-6 taking the season record to 10-4.
