The Fayette city council gave unanimous approval to adopt a new city-wide ordinance that bans Jake brakes in town. The measure was adopted at the council’s regular meeting held on Tuesday, June 14.
A Jake brake, or engine retarding brake, is defined as a brake system that alters the normal compression of the engine and subsequently releases that compression. Such brake systems emit excessively loud noises when deployed. Jake brakes are now prohibited on any public roads or highways inside the city limits.
Violating the new ordinance coils result in a fine of up to $500 and/or 90 days in jail.
Signs will be posted at the entrances to town.
