CMU women clinch 5th straight Heart regular season title

The No. 4 Central Methodist women completed a perfect Heart regular season with a 2-1 victory over Clarke University Friday afternoon at Davis Field on Senior Day.

Prior to the match, the Eagles honored eight seniors, including Joya-Maria Azzi, Devon Graham, Jessica Meira, Max De Armas Colombo, Raquel Ferreira, Aina Cantero, Celine Witt, and Alicia Zamora.

Central finishes the regular season 15-1-1 and 11-0 in conference play and clinches a fifth-straight Heart regular season championship outright.

After a scoreless first 36 minutes of play, Central was set up for a goal-scoring opportunity on a corner kick in the 37th minute.

Freshman Larissa Ozorio cued up the corner kick, sending the ball into the box, which found fellow freshman Nerea Munoz.

Munoz headed the ball into the back of the net for her second goal of the season, giving CMU a 1-0 lead.

Central pushed its lead to 2-0 in the 52nd minute on another corner kick. This time, Ozorio connected with Kirstine Lykke to extend the Eagles’ lead.

The Pride cut CMU’s lead to 2-1 just 10 minutes later on a defensive miscue. However, the Central defense would not allow a shot for the rest of the match, as CMU would go on to earn a 2-1 win.

As a team, CMU finished the afternoon with 12 shots, including eight shots on goal, compared to only two shots and one shot on goal for the Pride.

Witt and Mariana Barreto each tallied two shots, while Ozorio dished out two assists.

De Armas Colombo got the senior day start in between the posts, playing the first 62 minutes in goal.

Reigning Heart Defensive Player of the Week Candela Blanco Estaban played the final 28 minutes to close out the match.

The Eagles have earned the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament and will host the No. 8 seeded Baker University in the quarterfinals Saturday, Nov. 4 at Davis Field. The start time will be announced at a later date.
