Council mulls parking restrictions on Oaklawn Ave.

Posted

The Fayette city council is considering the restriction of parking on all, or at least a portion of, Oaklawn Avenue. Jocelyn Hutchinson, a resident of the street, asked the city council to address parking issues along the street during its latest regular meeting on Tuesday, July 25.

Hutchinson said cars parked along the street make it difficult to pull out of driveways. “It’s too tight of a turn to keep from hitting them.”

Hutchinson said another resident of the street asked her about the problem, so she brought it to the city council. She asked if parking could be restricted to at least one side of the street.

City Public Works Director Danny Dougherty concurred that the section of Oaklawn Avenue in question is a bad spot, and suggested the city restrict parking on both sides between Walnut and Morrison streets.

There is little to no shoulder on either side of the length of the street, so cars parked there are in the flow of traffic. Most streets in Fayette are narrow, having been designed long before the invention of automobiles.

Southwest Ward Alderwoman Bekki Galloway suggested the city ask residents along Oaklawn Avenue their thoughts on the matter. “Before we make this a blanket thing, shouldn’t we talk to people?”

Mayor Jeremy Dawson said the matter would be placed on the agenda for the council’s next meeting on Tuesday, August 8. Anyone who wishes to discuss the matter with the council can be added to the agenda, or file as a visitor prior to the start of the meeting. Meetings are held at 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month in City Hall.
