Council OKs Independence Day parade

Fayette will hold an Independence Day celebration once again this year, only with some changes. Due to the ongoing coronavirus, the festivities will be limited compared to years past.

The Fayette city council granted permission for the organizers of Fayette’s July 4 Party in the Park to host the annual parade throughout the Fayette City Park at 10 a.m. on July 4. Many games and events traditionally scheduled that day will not happen this year. Activities such as the presentation of the Quilts of Valor to veterans, frog and turtle races, pool games, and other children’s activities have been canceled for 2020.

Cathy Thogmorton, the Party in the Park’s chief organizer, said at least one food truck will set up by the pool.

The group plans to hold a veterans recognition in the lower shelter house following the parade. A band called Loaded Chamber will play country music and 70s era classic rock hits throughout the day in the lower shelter house. Picnic tables from the shelter house will be moved outside and separated by distances of at least six feet. Volunteers will also be stationed at park entrances to hand out free glow-in-the-dark necklaces.

The park will still be open for anyone wishing to picnic or otherwise use the grounds. The annual fireworks display will go on as usual at dusk.

Line up for the parade begins at 9:30 a.m. in the high school parking lot.
