After the first quarter of the game Saturday, it seemed as if the Lady Hornets of Atlanta and the Lady Bulldogs of New Franklin were evenly matched with Atlanta leading 6-4. That would not be the feeling at the end of the game as Atlanta emerged victorious by a score of 43-26.
Atlanta’s Bryann Magers led all scoring with 15 points. New Franklin’s Abby Maupin hit two from beyond the three-point line to boost her to a total of 10 points to lead the Lady Bulldog scoring. Carly Dorson contributed eight points for New Franklin as the Lady Bulldogs begin the season at 0-1.
Acting Head Coach Ashley Freese stated the girls played pretty well but New Franklin “was down on numbers this week with two starters and pretty key bench players not able to play.” Playing with a “very young group, “ Freese said “we had two that had never really played before and one that had played just a little bit, the three returning starters, however, did a good job of trying to keep us in it.”
Getting into foul trouble early made it difficult to keep those players in the game as New Franklin coach Freese said “we lost some crucial minutes during that time.”
Freese noted the teams “top three scorers were not here tonight and Atlanta knew that.” Atlanta led by seven at the half and pulled away in the fourth quarter outscoring New Franklin 13-5.
New Franklin Lady Bulldogs next action will be against the Fayette Falcons at 5 p.m. on December 2 at the Glasgow Yellowjacket Invitational Tournament.
