The Central Methodist men’s cross-country team had a memorable day at the Brian Simpson Invitational Saturday morning in Columbia.
Sophomore Kyle Newberry finished the 8K in 29th place with a time of 26:02.56, the 16th fastest 8K time in program history. Senior Grant Engel ran the race in 26:14.76 to place 36th. Engel’s time was good enough to join Newberry in the CMU all-time Top 25 at No. 18.
Also competing for CMU were Meshack Kiptanui (76th - 27:20.55), Elliott Reed (168th - 30:30.15), and David Ceballos (187th - 34:18.28).
In all, 190 athletes representing 14 different teams from the NAIA, NCAA Division II, and club levels competed in the invitational.
The CMU men placed 11th with 294 points. St. Mary (Kan.) won the team title with 39 points, followed by Drury (59) and Kansas Wesleyan (100).
Central will conclude regular season competition at the Blazing Tiger Classic next Saturday in Ashland, Neb.
