However, the Mustangs came back in the second game of the double header to end the Eagles’ 14-game winning streak by a score of 6-5. It was the first conference loss of the season for No. 20 CMU, who is 5-1 in Heart play and 15-4 overall.
Sergio Macias hit a pair of three-run shots and now leads the conference in home runs and is second in runs driven in with 32.
Logan Haring and Adrian Martinez hit back-to-back home runs to give CMU a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Eagles led 10-0 before Mount Mercy got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning.
Martinez finished the game 4-4 at the plate. Z Westley was 3-4 and scored three runs.
Kenny Otero allowed one run on six hits and three walks over seven innings and struck out six. Otero, who has the lowest ERA in the conference at 0.79, also had two hits and drove in three runs to help his own cause.
Two hit batters and an error cost the Eagles during a five-run fifth inning for Mount Mercy in game two.
After a leadoff single, CMU recorded the first out of the fifth inning on a bunt by the Mustangs. The next five batters reached base for Mount Mercy before Beau Atkins came on in relief to end the inning with a pair of strikeouts.
Haring hit one out of the park again, scoring three to pull the Eagles within a run in the sixth. Devon Garcia singled in the seventh to put the tying run on base, but CMU was unable to bring him home to keep the winning streak alive.
The Eagles host a three-game series with conference foe Evangel this weekend. Games begin at noon on Friday and Saturday. CMU has a short road trip to Columbia College (15-5) on Tuesday, March 17. First pitch will be at 6 p.m.
