Central Methodist certainly faced its most formidable opponent of the season Saturday afternoon, falling 65-0 against No. 2 nationally ranked Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Central now stands at 1-4 to conclude cross-division play, while Grand View keeps its perfect record intact at 5-0.
The Vikings scored 35 points in the first quarter, followed by 21 in the second, to take a 56-0 lead into the locker room at the halftime break.
Grand View scored a touchdown in the third quarter, followed by a safety in the fourth, making the final score 65-0 in favor of the Vikings. GVU generated more than 400 yards of offense, including 247 yards on the ground, to wind the clock in the game’s later stages.
KeShawn Wilson led CMU’s defense with nine tackles, followed by Joseph Slattery with seven, and Kyjuan Collins and Jerich Givens each with six. Nyjahl Vaughn and Omarion Slaw both recorded an interception.
Three different Eagle quarterbacks saw action against the Vikings. Combined, Joe Cambridge, Gavin Watts, and Alvaro Ortega-Morales picked up just 65 yards. The rushing game finished the day 31 yards to the negative. Fayette native Garren Vroman gained just one yard on five carries. He also had one pass reception for 21 yards.
Central is back on the road Saturday to next on Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) in a non-conference matchup at noon in Bourbonnais, Ill. The Tigers are 3-2 overall, having won their last two games by 20 points or more.
The Eagles return next Saturday to host Benedictine University (4-2) at 1 p.m.
