Falcons can’t keep up with reigning state champs Tipton

The Fayette Falcons were able to move the ball somewhat but couldn’t find the end zone against reigning Class 1 champion and top-ranked Tipton at home Friday, falling 75-0.

The visiting Cardinals entered Friday’s Central State 8 Conference game riding a 17-game winning streak that included the Class 1 state championship a year ago and maintaining a No. 1 state ranking. A perennial powerhouse, Tipton, took control early, scoring four touchdowns in the first quarter on the way to a 54-0 halftime lead.

Fayette, in its first year of a rebuilding process under head coach Kenny Grubb, showed fight despite the long odds, moving the ball into Tipton territory a few times. But they were unable to match the experience of an opponent built on decades of winning tradition.

“It was rough. That’s a good football team. We’re trying to be a good football team. We’re working at that. I think our guys are working hard at it every day,” Coach Grubb said after the game. “Our kids play hard. There are some things we can build on. There are also some things that are concerning. But we will get those things fixed, and we’ll move forward.”

While Tipton scored on every possession, Fayette showed gumption on both sides of the ball, fighting for every yard on every play, albeit with often unfruitful results.

Sophomore Justin Kunze made a tackle to prevent a two-point conversion midway through the first quarter.

Late in the first quarter, senior quarterback Colten Cross connected with sophomore Paxton Llewellyn on a pass over the middle to move the sticks.

Early in the second quarter, senior fullback Brodi Tucker smashed his way across midfield into Tipton territory for another Fayette first down. On the Falcons’ next drive, Cross broke loose for a big run across midfield to convert a third-and-15 situation and set up a fresh set of downs.

Senior Ledgyr Conrow produced a couple of strong kickoff returns and picked up a first down in the second half.

So while the score doesn’t indicate it, the Falcons continued to fight and learn in the face of insurmountable opposition.

“I think our kids are seeing every week, and we’re trying to explain every week that this is not a one-week process. It’s not a one-year process. Our seniors are giving themselves completely to it. And I appreciate the heck out of them,” Grubb said. “That’s what it’s really about for me. How much can we grow to give those guys one more game or two more games? They deserve that. They have given themselves to this cause that we have. They get a year, but they know they’re laying a foundation for something bigger.”

The Falcons are expected to be back at full power on Friday when they travel to Class 2 South Callaway. Senior Isaiah Monckton sat out against Tipton after sustaining an injury the week prior at Linn. He will be suited up when Fayette takes the field Friday night.

South Callaway (3-4) snapped a three-game losing streak Friday night with a 56-0 CS8 win over a young Harrisburg team. They will play their final home game of the regular season against Fayette on Senior Night.

South Callaway lost a lopsided game against Tipton in Week 5 and fell 27-26 to Russellville in Week 6. Coach Grubb said if his team emerges from last week’s tough matchup hungry and ready to make opportunities, there will be a chance to pick up a win.

“This is a game where, if we go and play well and get better, we’re in this thing at the end. And we give ourselves a shot to win at the end. That’s what I really want. Our guys need chances to win, and we need to find ways to win. That’s going to grow us as well. We have a couple of wins to go get, and we need to do that.”

Kickoff on Friday is at 7 p.m. in Mokane.

The Falcons then return home next week to take on area rival Harrisburg in the regular-season finale on October 23 on Senior Night.

The Class 1 District 7 playoffs begin on Friday, October 30. Fayette is sitting third in the five-team district behind unbeaten Salisbury, ranked No. 2 in Class 1, and Westran (4-3), against whom the Falcons lost a close game in Week 4. Harrisburg and Van Far make up the bottom of the current playoff picture, both with 1-6 records.

The season finale between Fayette and Harrisburg could have significant implications for the district seeding. A win for Fayette would likely give the Falcons a first-round bye, while Harrisburg could face a play-in quarterfinal game.
