Fayette Disc Golf hosts inaugural summer rec program

Posted

The Fayette City Park was host to a Disc Golf Summer Rec Program this summer as well as a Youth Disc Golf Tournament on July 30, headed by Fayette City Park Disc Golf course manager Matthew Klusmeyer.

Klusmeyer was named manager of the course this July and has been a certified member of the Professional Disc Golf Association for more than a year. Klusmeyer, Sean Pridgeon, Josh Kirby, and Laramie Shaffer ran the program. The Fayette Summer Rec Program donated $500 to the disc golf program, and Southwest Ward Alderwoman Bekki Galloway of the city council donated $200. The totaled $700 was used to purchase three-disc sets from Klusmeyer’s sponsor, Goliath Disc, and shoulder bags. Dennis Campbell of Fulton, Missouri, donated custom-made resin mini markers to complete the kids’ starter packs.

The program drew 20 kids: seven elementary-age girls, one middle school-age girl, eight elementary-age boys, and four middle school-age boys.

Prizes for the tournament, held in the city park on July 30, consisted of discs, bags, disc golf baskets, mini markers, stickers, and travel stools. These prizes were donated by various businesses across mid-Missouri, such as Play It Again Sports of Columbia, Smoking Aces of Wentzville, Truly Unique Discs of Belton, Show Me Discs of Columbia, Grow and Throw of Columbia, Banging Chains LLC of Fulton, The Original Disc Golf Dad, and the Fayette Disc Golf Organization. Overall, donations totaled nearly $2,000 in value. Everyone who participated in the tournament won a prize.

The tournament was split into four divisions: MA-E (Mixed Amateur Elementary), FA-E (Female Amateur Elementary), MA-M (Mixed Amateur Middle School), and FA-M (Female Amateur Middle School). The elementary divisions played a 9-Hole Modified Tees course, and the middle school divisions played a regular 9-hole course. Across the four divisions, 15 children participated: five elementary-age girls, one middle school-age girl, five elementary-age boys, and four middle school-age boys. First place in the MA-E went to Rylan Vroman. Vroman had the best score across all four divisions, finishing one under par. Second place in the MA-E went to Ayden Bishop, third to Amare’ Bishop, fourth to Jax McCutcheon, and fifth to Eli Klusmeyer. In the FA-E, first place was Evelyn Klusmeyer, second was Danica Ford, third was Abigail Shaffer, fourth was Avery Durreman, and fifth was Violet Kirby. First place in the MA-M went to Issac Sheridan, second to Zach Ford, third to Kenai Crook, and fourth to Dominic Klusmeyer. There was only one participant in the FA-M division, with first place going to Miranda Liceaga.

Due to the number of donations, more than 20 three-disc sets were gifted to the tournament participants’ parents, siblings, and friends. In the end, more than 40 disc-sets were given out with encouragement for parents and kids to learn the sport together.
