Fayette girls outlast Glasgow in overtime for Consolation

Posted

The Fayette girls came from behind in the second half of the consolation final Saturday in the Glasgow Tournament and snatched victory away from the home team in overtime.

Glasgow had a chance to go ahead late in the fourth quarter from the free-throw line. Tied 54-54 with nine seconds left in regulation, both shots missed, and the score remained deadlocked when the buzzer sounded.

Fayette would go on to outscore Glasgow 13-2 in overtime to win 67-56.

“It was a crazy game,” said Fayette coach Daryl Betts.

Fayette struck first with a bucked from the inside by junior KeBrea Fair on the Lady Falcons’ first possession. Both teams traded baskets until Glasgow took a 7-4 lead.

But Fayette clawed its way back to go up 10-9 after one quarter.

The Lady Jackets owned the second quarter, outscoring Fayette 16-8. They retook the lead with four quick points in the opening 90 seconds. A 7-0 run midway through the second period put Glasgow firmly in front. By halftime, the Lady Jackets held a 25-18 advantage.

Glasgow pulled further ahead in the opening minute of the second half to make it a nine-point lead. But Fayette made adjustments and outscored the Lady Jackets 11-2, culminating with a long 3-point shot by Addy Gibbs from the top of the key with 4:09 on the clock to tie the game at 29 apiece. A jump shot by senior Kay Sullivan 30 seconds later put the Lady Falcons in front by two.

Glasgow scoring machine Halle Fuemmeler answered right back with the three on the other end to put her team back in front. Another 3-point shot by Hannah DeMint with two minutes to play in the period kept the Lady Jackets alive in a back-and-forth game.

After trailing by three, Fayette junior Oakleigh Hill scored from the paint on an outstanding inbounds pass from senior Maddox Wells with four seconds left to keep the teams within one point with eight minutes left to play.

Glasgow jumped ahead again to start what would have been the final period, leading by as much as 11 points with three and a half minutes on the clock.

A putback by Fair seconds later sparked a 12-0 run over the next two minutes, concluding with another 3-point shot from Gibbs to put Fayette in front 54-53.

A free throw by Glasgow sophomore Hailey Monnig with 35 seconds left tied the game 54 each.

She later had a chance to break the stalemate with nine seconds left but missed both free throws. Hill grabbed the rebound for Fayette and dribbled down, but Fayette couldn’t find a way to score before the buzzer signaled the end of regulation with the score knotted at 54-54.

Fair broke the tie just 37 seconds into the four-minute overtime period with a free throw to ignite a 13-2 run in the four-minute overtime aided by a half-dozen Glasgow turnovers.

Glasgow’s only overtime points came from the free-throw line. Freshman Aly Prentzler sank one with 96 seconds left to play. Monnig made the other on the Lady Jacket’s next possession.

Glasgow tried to work the ball inside but settled for a few 3-point tries that bounced away. Meanwhile, Fayette played with tenacity, rebounding and scoring from the paint, making steals, and breaking presses.

“We did that all with 2:40 left in the game,” Betts said about his team’s comeback.

The Lady Falcons were led by senior forward Kay Sullivan with a team-high 17 points. Fair posted up 11 points, and athletic sophomore Browyn Eubanks finished with 11.

“Our bigs did big work,” Betts said about his team’s inside game.

Halle Fuemmeler led Glasgow with an incredible 38 points to lead all scorers.

The Lady Jackets, now 2-2 overall, return to regular-season action with a non-conference game at Westran on Thursday.

The Lady Hornets surprised everyone last week. They entered the Glasgow Tournament as the seventh seed but scored two upsets for the right to play for the tournament championship. Westran ended up settling for second place after falling to two-time defending champions Cairo in the title game.

On Friday, Glasgow will take on undefeated Cairo at home to end a streak of seven challenging games to open the season. The Lady Jackets close out 2023 with a home matchup against winless Pilot Grove on December 12. They ring in the new year at the Salisbury Invitation Tournament, starting on January 2.

Fayette walked away with the consolation trophy only to jump into a rematch with district rival New Franklin on Tuesday after the Advertiser had gone to press. The Lady Bulldogs pulled a five-point upset over the Falcons in the tournament opener last Tuesday.

On Thursday, Fayette will have the honor of playing on the state’s biggest stage at the Norm Stewart Class at Mizzou Arena. The Lady Falcons face Class 5 behemoth Helias Catholic at 9 a.m. Friday.

Fayette travels to Harrisburg on Tuesday to open the final season for both teams as members of the Lewis & Clark Conference. The Lady Falcons then return home for a three-game home stand, beginning with a bout against Slater on December 14.
