Second place may not seem big for some, but for the Glasgow girl’s cross-country team it was huge. “Second place was like first place for us,” said head coach Becky Thompson after the team was presented with their second-place trophy. “We’re so excited.”
Behind a strong race by freshman Addison Barringhaus who finished second in the class and senior Malia Carmack placing 17th, Glasgow was able to hold on to the second-place finish by six points over third-place St. Vincent High School.
The State champion team was Van Buren.
The only runner faster than Barringhaus was Smithton’s Riley Bryan who crossed the finish line in 18:27.60 followed by Barringhaus at 20:20.90.
“Addison is just something else,” said coach Thompson. Just a freshman, Barringhaus has three more years to compete for Thompson and Glasgow High School.
Senior Malia Carmack finished nine minutes faster in 2021 than she did as a junior on the same course in the state meet in 2020 with a time of 21:25.20. Carmack was awarded a medal as were all of the top 25 finishers of the 155 runners. “She had some health problems last year,” said Thompson. “She got those straightened out and did great this year.”
Rounding out the rest of the team was freshman Hannah DeMint who finished 65th with a time of 23:24.20. Another freshman, Kaitlyn Monnig finished 93rd, covering the course in 24:08.00.
Junior Macie Parks ran the course in 24:40.30 in 112th place, while sophomore KatiJo Schaefer finished in 25:01.20 for 121st place. Senior Tehya Sellmeyer finished the course with a time of 27:26.30 in 145th place.
“My other senior, Tehya Sellmeyer, was such a great team leader,” said Thompson. “Tehya was with us for four years. She loved to hate cross country, but I’m so proud of her. All of my kids I’m proud of, every one of them.”
Thompson also coaches the Glasgow boys’ team which sent two runners, freshmen Zachary Sayler and Jackson Strodtman, to the state meet. Strodtman finished just shy of a medal in 28th place while Sayler finished 90th out of 172.
In addition to Glasgow, another area school, Higbee, sent two runners to the Class 1 race, freshman Ronnie Welch and junior Hailey Derboven. Welch finished in 71st place with a time of 23:32.10, while Derboven covered the course in 24:52.00 to finish in the 117th spot.
The state meet was held at the Gans Creek Recreation Area south of Columbia.
