Glasgow’s Sanders joins 1000 point club as Yellow Jackets rout Madison

The Glasgow boy’s basketball team got an early wakeup call Friday when it found that, due to impending weather, the game against the Madison Panthers had been moved up two hours. The early start did not seem to deter the Yellowjackets as they rolled over Madison 68-29. The win was important for the Jackets as it improved the team record to 10-4.

“We’ve had a really good start to the second half of the season,” said Glasgow head coach Mick Cropp. “I feel like we’ve got a lot of momentum going into a big conference week next week, and then on into the Slater tournament.”

The win, however, took a back seat to another event that occurred in the second quarter, even if only for a few moments. With 6:28 left in the half and Glasgow leading 27-12, senior Drew Sanders took a pass beyond the three-point arc and turned to hit the 3-pointer. That shot put Sanders among high school basketball elite as he joined the 1,000-point club. Timeout was called as Sanders and his teammates, coaches, and fans celebrated his milestone.

“I was thinking about how many 1,000-point scorers we’ve had here,” said Cropp. Cropp estimated Sanders brought the total to almost10. “All those scorers make me a good coach,” Cropp said with a wry smile.

When order was restored it was back to the business of basketball for the Yellowjackets. The game had started off with Glasgow establishing dominance over the Panthers by outscoring them 24-10 in the first quarter. Perhaps somewhat due to the anticipation of what was going to happen, and then what had just happened when Sanders hit his historic shot, the Jackets were somewhat subdued in the second quarter. They still banked 14 points to take a 38-17 lead into the locker room.

Glasgow came roaring back after halftime, again holding Madison to seven points while putting up 26 to take a commanding 64-24 lead after three quarters. With substitutions flowing freely, the game ended with Glasgow on top 68-29.

Sanders led all scorers with 19 points on the evening. “Getting one 1,000 feels great,” said Sanders after the game. “It’s been a long time but finally I got it, it feels good. Finally hitting that shot was weight off the heart.”

Sanders is the third Glasgow player to hit 1,000 points this season. Lady Jackets Malia Carmack and Brenna Hubbard each joined the club earlier in the year.

Junior Edris Hamilton put up 16 points for Glasgow. Senior Zane Johanning added nine, while classmates Spencer Wood and Kelten Morning each put in eight.

Seniors Blake Goetze, Christian DeWolfe, and Kelly Shields, along with sophomore Ryan Graves each added two points apiece to round out the scoring for Glasgow.

“It was a good night, we came out and did what we needed to do and came out and played well,” said coach Cropp.

The Yellowjackets traveled to Slater Tuesday night after The Advertiser went to press. They will host Sturgeon (6-7) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. before participating in the Slater Wildcat Classic next week.
