Meet Blitz, the Howard County Sheriff’s Department’s newest officer.
Blitz is a German Shepherd who is almost two years old. He started his first shift Friday afternoon with Deputy Matt Jones.
Blitz was born in Hungary and was hand-picked from a kennel in Pennsylvania. He was trained for law enforcement by the Boone County Sheriff’s Department.
He is the first dog in three decades to be deployed with the Howard County Sheriff’s Department.
The cost to purchase the new K9 totaled around $8,900. Sheriff Jeff Oswald said that no county funds were spent. Blitz was purchased with funds raised and donated locally.
“We appreciate all of our donors for helping the department to acquire a K9 unit,” said Sheriff Oswald.
Blitz specializes in tracking, apprehension, and drug detection.
