The Glasgow Yellowjackets made convincing work of district rival Higbee Monday, winning 11-0 in front of a boisterous home crowd on Senior Night.
The Lady Jackets’ win over Higbee was the second in three days after Glasgow won a 6-1 decision in the semifinals of the Brunswick Tournament on Saturday. Glasgow lost to Slater for the championship 7-4, which Glasgow coach Allison Foster said was an eye opener for the team.
“We were coming off kind of a rough weekend for us from the Brunswick tournament. I thought our girls really did a good job of bouncing back from that tonight,” Foster said.
On Monday, the Lady Jackets posted three runs in each of the first two innings as well as the fifth inning and scored twice in the fourth inning. Four of the team’s 11 runs were driven in by senior Aynslie Locke, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored.
“We’ve been pretty strong defensively all year. This weekend we struggled to put much together offensively, and I thought we did better at that tonight,” Foster said. “We made a few lineup changes tonight, and I thought that worked out for us.”
Locke also dominated in the circle, striking out eight of 17 batters without surrendering a hit or a run. She walked one batter in the first inning during an otherwise perfect night.
Glasgow drove in nine of 11 runs on 15 hits and three walks. Leadoff senior Karah Graves went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore Brenna Adams drove in two runs on two hits, both doubles, in four at-bats and scored twice.
Senior slugger Aly Prenzler scored twice and was walked twice and struck by a pitch.
Sophomore Kenley Strodtman hit 2-for-2, walked once, and drove in a run.
Sophomore Kynlee Gerlack was the power hitter of the night. She tripled and doubled, going 3-for-3 with a run scored.
Freshman Kynleigh Stricker rounded out the Glasgow batters with a 1-for-3 night with a run scored.
Locke put her team in the lead early in the bottom of the first with a one-out triple, driving in the first two runs of the game. She then scored on a single by Strodtman to take a quick 3-0 lead.
Doubles by Gerlach and Adams, along with singles by Graves, Locke, and Strodtman, gave the Jackets a six-run lead after two innings.
Glasgow scored twice more in the fourth as Higbee pitcher Kiersten Rockett struggled from the circle.
After inducing a flyout from the leadoff batter, Rockett hit Prentzler, who would later steal home. She also allowed a single by Locke, who would also score in the inning on a sacrifice groundout.
Higbee was unable to capitalize from its second player to reach base in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Kylie Sinklear took first after a dropped third strike but was stranded on base. She would be the final Lady Tiger to reach first base after Rockett walked in the top of the first.
Glasgow put the game away in the bottom of the fifth, leading off with three straight singles by Gerlach, Stricker, and Graves, followed by an RBI double by Adams. After intentionally passing Prentzler, Locke drove in two runs on a walk-off single to end the game via the 10-run rule.
Glasgow’s three seniors, Graves, Locke, and Prentzler, combined to score seven runs on seven hits and five RBI.
“They are the heart and soul of this team. I’ve told them that more than once,” Foster said after watching her seniors honored after the game. “They are not only a talented group, but they have leadership that goes off the field far beyond softball. They’re all great kids, and I have been privileged to coach them the last four years.”
Monday’s win improved Glasgow’s overall record to 12-4 with the final stretch of the season leading to the Class 1 District 3 Tournament at Eugene starting on October 14. The Lady Jackets are currently tied with Eugene for second in the nine-team district behind St. Elizabeth at 13-6 overall.
“Just like in the past couple of years, we have been put in a pretty tough district. But if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. We’ve beaten several of the teams in the district already. I think we can hang with anybody,” Foster said.
Glasgow has just two home games left in the regular season. On Tuesday, the Jackets were scheduled to play at Brunswick before returning Thursday to host Sturgeon (5-7). Both games next week are on the road. Glasgow travels to Tina-Avalon on Tuesday and Fayette on Thursday.
The Jackets host Westran for the regular-season finale at home on October 12.
Coach Foster said she hopes the Glasgow faithful cheer on the team the rest of the season. “Come out and support us for the rest of the season. We have a few more games left, and then we make the drive to Eugene. We will need lots of support down there.”
