Central Methodist senior pitcher Nick Merkel was recognized as the Heart Pitcher of the Week by the conference office on Monday.
This marks the first conference honor for Merkel this season. The native of Spokane, Washington tossed a complete game shut out last Friday in Central's 7-0 win over Missouri Baptist. He struck out 10 batters and allowed just five hits and one walk in the victory.
Through five starts this season, Merkel has posted a 4-1 record, compiled a 2.03 earned run average, and averaged 8.6 strikeouts per game.
The Eagles hosted Graceland University on Monday for the Eagles’ home opener at Estes Field.
