New Franklin Teachers Staff to See Pay Increase

The New Franklin School Board met May 12. Topping discussion were salary increases for teachers and other school staff for the 2004-05 academic year. Unexpected funds received from the state, prompted Superintendent Jeanie Gordon to recommend a $1,000 raise for all teachers. The recommendation was approved.

Instructional aides' pay will be increased by $1 per hour, in addition to a 6 percent raise in current salaries. Further, there will be no increase in insurance premiums as in recent years. Currently, the district pays 75 percent of each individual's $450 per month premium.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has authorized a loan of $242,000 for installation of ground source heating and cooling for the school. The loan is paid off with savings from energy bills, estimated to be about $20,000 a year.

A bid for an audit from Gruber, Tanzey & Co. of Mexico, Mo., was accepted. New analysis requirements, initiated in response to recent accounting scandals, caused audit fees increase by 77 percent to $5,025.
Disappointment was expressed at the announcement that the district was not granted the e-MINTS grant funds to provide more electronic instruction. The explanations for the rejections were twofold: New Franklin students' academic achievement is relatively high and poverty levels are not 'low' enough to warrant grant funds. District officials will use existing funds for this initiative.

Language Specialist Mary Mackey presented results of pre- and post-testing of preschool students' language performance. Students showed significant gains in all areas. Elementary Principal Vikki Brent explained that Mackey works with all preschool students, as well as with special education students in the areas of speech and language therapy. Development of language skills in preschool students positively impacts future academic performance, according to Mackey and Brent.
In other business, the Board:

'Learned that foundation work for the new elementary wing and the industrial technology building is under way.

' Was informed that 36 students enrolled for the next school year's kindergarten class. Often more students show up the first day of school, so at least 40 kindergartners are expected.

' Learned that summer school will begin June 2. More than 100 students have enrolled.
