Newell Simmons Ferry III, “Chip,” of New Franklin, Missouri, passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 5, 2023.

Chip was born in Webster Groves, Missouri, to Newell S. Ferry, Jr. and Elsa Engelsmann Ferry in June of 1934. He graduated from Webster Groves High School and then attended Northwestern University in Chicago as a member of ROTC. After graduation, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Air Force. He served as a navigator assigned to the 60th Fighter Squadron at Otis Air Force Base in Cape Cod, Mass. The 60th was the first squadron to test the F-101B Voodoo Interceptor, which set a number of world speed records. Chip shared many stories about those exciting times.

Chip’s business endeavors included ownership of the Hobby Horse and the Sweet Shop in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, work for K Mart Corp., and he established Central Coin, a coin, stamp, and clock business in Columbia, Missouri, which he ran until his retirement. Chip was well respected for his expertise and honesty in dealing with fine coins. He had a lifelong passion for coins, stamps, and antique clocks, which kept him busy well into his retirement.

Family was always Chip’s top priority, and following his grandson’s numerous sporting events was one of his greatest joys. He was a member of Linn Memorial Methodist Church in Fayette, Missouri, the South Howard County Historical Society, and the Boonslick Historical Society, and he volunteered with the Howard County Food Pantry for 16 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Brett Paul Duvall.

Chip is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Martha “Marty” Ferry of New Franklin, Missouri; his brother, Seneca “Buzz” Ferry II, Md. (Elaine) of Oviedo, Florida; his two children, James Ferry (Beth) of Belleville, Illinois, and Amalie Duvall of Boonville, Missouri; his stepsons Nelson Leonard (Nancy) of Bellair, Missouri,  Mitch Leonard of New Franklin, Missouri, and Brad Leonard (Sharon) of Huntington Beach California He was blessed with 14 grandchildren, Missy, Abiel, Cassie, Nathaniel (B), Chris, James, Ben, Morgan, Josh, Ellen, Evan, Rhodes, Cash, and Race, 13 great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Howard County Food Pantry – The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri.

At the family’s request, there will be no services.
