Response to ‘City Discusses Parking Issues’

Posted

To the Editor:

My parking address is 507 Linn Street. In response to the City Council discussion and the inquiry to lift “some” parking spaces on Linn Street I am reaffirming my position regarding “NO PARKING” on Linn Street; specifically, between Lucky Street & Crib Street. The residents on the Linn block between Lucky and Crib fought hard for this accommodation,  eliminating parking within this block was presented to council and approved. These concerns were first presented about the use of the Mcgraw House for campus housing and subsequent parking concerns. George Befort (505 Linn Resident) followed up and formalized this request at a council meeting and a no parking ordinance was enacted. Eliminating parking has improved safety on Linn Street and reduced homeowner aggravation. Improvements include reducing the narrowing of an already narrow road, improved safety for children, pedestrians, less litter, and more importantly homeowners are not blocked by cars parked across from or diagonal to driveways. In addition, it  may be a suitable time to revisit the topic of zoning. Our neighborhoods are zoned, single-family residential - street parking should be the exception and certainly not the norm. We realize students rent housing in Fayette neighborhood homes however if the rental unit does not have enough parking for renters then overflow students should purchase CMU (Central Methodist University) parking passes. In regard to homeowners who are concerned about parking for holidays and overflow I can empathize, perhaps there is a solution that can meet their needs. Regardless, I respectfully request that current parking restrictions remain in effect for the block I defined above.

Respectfully,

Dr. Rebbecca Fenton
