S. Callaway halts Fayette girls’ winning streak

Posted

The Class 3 South Callaway Lady Bulldogs snapped Fayette’s three-game winning streak, defeating the Lady Falcons 48-26 at home on Friday.

South Callaway was able to get out to an early lead and held the Lady Falcons to single digits in each quarter to earn a the double-digit win.

With the Lady Bulldogs putting 17 points on the board in the first quarter, Fayette would need to put up more than the five points it managed on their side of the board in subsequent frames. Unfortunately, in the second quarter Fayette could only manage  three points, while South Callaway put up 17 more to make the score at halftime 34-8.

“Unfortunately, we came out flat and did not compete to start this game,” said Fayette coach Brian Spielbauer. “We’ve got to give credit to South Callaway for coming out strong as well.”

In the third, Fayette held the Lady Bulldogs to 12, but still were only able to hit for nine to make the score 46-17 in favor of the visiting Lady Bulldogs.

Fayette outscored the Lady Bulldogs 9-2 in the fourth but it was not enough to put much of a dent in the lead South Callaway had built as the game ended with South Callaway winning 48-26.

“We did better in the second half and competed,” said coach Spielbauer.

Senior Sydney Spielbauer led Fayette in scoring as she dropped in 12 points. She earned the 12 by hitting four 3-pointers, one in each quarter.

Sophomore Kay Sullivan put in four. Freshman Melissa Innes hit a 3-pointer.

Senior Laci Fuhlage, junior Hannah Quint, and freshman Lasaydra Jackman each added two points.

Sophomore Addison Powell rounded out the Fayette scoring by putting in a free-throw in the fourth.

The loss snaps the Lady Falcons’ streak. Fayette has won four out of its last six games since returning from Christmas break. The girls opened play in the Harrisburg tournament on Monday as the seventh seed against the No. 2 seeded Mexico Lady Bulldogs.
