To the Editor:
I commend Central Methodist University (CMU) for the intended effort to improve the section of its campus bordering Hwy 240/Church Street. The curb and gutter along that stretch of road are in a constant state of disrepair and the road itself has long been one of the most dangerous areas in our town - for drivers and pedestrians alike.
Given the layout of the campus and the use of the facilities this road serves, it is impractical to consider limiting or eliminating parking in this area. Therefore, changes in both form and function are required.
During my time on the Fayette Board of Alderman, I supported our city’s efforts to earn Tree City USA status and I would only advocate for the removal of healthy trees when there are compelling reasons to do so.
The safety issues alone warrant consideration of making significant changes there. CMU has a long history of responsible management of its buildings and grounds (including trees) - one that often extends beyond its borders into other areas of our town. The approach to this project is no exception.
Thus, I look forward to seeing an increase in safety for pedestrians and travelers, an improvement in function of the space, and the overall beautification of this section of road – all in the context of responsible management of our community’s green assets.
