Thurman estate donates $150k toward splash park

Posted

The City of Fayette will receive $175,000 from the estate of the late Lucile Thurman, the majority of which is earmarked for a new splash park. The gift was announced at the June 30 special meeting of the Board of Alderman.

Fayette has been accepting donations with the hopes of building a splash park near the pool in the City Park. The project is estimated to cost around $250,000. Up to now, donations have surpassed $100,000. A large pledge of $75,000 had been promised from an anonymous source.

Thurman was a well known Howard County resident and businesswoman. She passed away June 4, less than seven weeks before her 101st birthday.

The gift stipulates that $25,000 be used to create a memorial bench in the park and that a dogwood tree be planted, while $150,000 is to help fund the splash park.

The gift now puts the splash park’s pledges at more than $250,000.

The city has yet to collect the gift. A letter to the city explaining the donations said the estate intends to make the money available sometime after an estate sale that is scheduled for July 25. However, due to legal procedures involving probate courts, it could take up to two years before the donation is realized.

John Pettit, head of the pool ad hoc committee for the city, said that once the money is in hand, the bidding process can begin.
