Vroman scores five touchdowns for fourth time in 2021

The Fayette Falcons wasted no time in asserting their dominance over the Slater Wildcats in a 66-24 victory at home on Friday in district action.

Fayette senior Garren Vroman had three touchdowns on a 35-yard pass reception, and 122-rushing yards by the end of the first quarter. Senior DJ Moore added a 19-yard touchdown run to give the Falcons a commanding 28-8 advantage at the end of the first stanza.

Slater attempted to get back in the game early in the second quarter with a nine-yard touchdown pass and two-point conversion to bring them to within 14-points.

Junior Chase Allen-Jackman answered right back with a touchdown on a 46-yard reception from classmate Ben Wells to take the Falcon lead to 34-16.

Then, it was Vroman’s turn again as he tacked on runs of 49 and 35 yards for touchdowns to give Fayette a 46-16 lead at the half.

Coming out of the locker room, Slater was able to drive to the three-yard line then push the ball across to make the score 46-24.

Allen-Jackman again provided the answer, this time on a 31-yard touchdown run to make the score 52-24.

Attempting to run out the clock did not work so well for the Falcons. DJ Moore rumbled through the Wildcat defense for a 67-yard touchdown run to make the score 60-24 at the end of the third quarter.

Senior Cale Hudson tacked on another touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 51-yard run as the Fayette offense proved its dominance over Slater by a score of 66-24.

It was the second straight game in which Fayette would end up with a 66-24 score as last week they defeated Father Tolton by the same margin.

Vroman had another stellar game, carrying nine times for 233-yards and four touchdowns.

“Garren is so patient with his blocks,” said Fayette head coach Mike Thompson. “When he gets a seam, he has a burst and he’s gone, but we can’t look past the offensive linemen. DJ (Moore) plays at a tight end position most of the time and he is a road grader up there. Logan Wiswall is also up there and they are blocking at the point of attack a lot and them are difference makers. Those linemen like running the football.”

Moore added 101-yards on five carries and pushed across two touchdowns while Hudson carried two times for 49-yards. Allen-Jackman carried the ball twice for 31-yards and a score.

Wells added six yards on one carry while sophomore Carmelo Hockaday had one carry for four yards. Senior Avery Powell pounded for three yards on another run, as did sophomore Brandon Moore.

As a group, the Fayette offense averaged 18.35-yards per carry against Slater, nearly doubling the Falcon season average of 9.26-yards per carry.

Wells added to his season passing total by completing six of his 11 attempted passes for 130-yards and two touchdowns.

Allen-Jackman made the most of his lone reception by taking it to the house on a 46-yard touchdown.

Vroman also earned 46-yards on three catches and also garnered a touchdown for his efforts.

Senior Dalton Collins had 38-yards on two receptions.

Defensively, DJ Moore led the team by being in on 18 tackles, and one sack.

Senior Chris Brown contributed to 16 tackles, with three being for a loss, and two sacks. His classmate, Avery Powell was in on 14 tackles. Another senior, Logan Wiswall, added 12.

Freshman Micah Estes continued on his ninth-grade tear by adding nine tackles. Senior Tyler Bartholomew and junior Malakai Graves each contributed seven tackles while senior Dalton Collins had six tackles and one interception. Junior Haden Kelly pulled down five Slater runners.

Hudson had four tackles while juniors Wesley Miner and Allen-Jackman each had three. Allen-Jackman also had an interception and two tackles for loss while Miner recovered a fumble.

Hockaday had two tackles and freshman Jacob Wood had one tackle for a loss and forced a fumble.

“We had a pretty good idea what they were going to do offensively,” said Thompson. “We knew they were never going to punt if they could get three yards on every play offensively. We knew if we got enough stops, they weren’t going to stop us.”

On the night, the Falcons gave up two of the three two-point conversions Slater attempted. “The last couple of weeks we’ve been horrible on defense on the two-point conversions,” said Thompson. “Every time we’d give up six, we’d give up two more.

“Offensively, I’ve sometimes put us in a position to not be as successful as we could be,” said Thompson after the Falcons were only able to convert two of the 10 two-point conversions they attempted. “I need to do a little bit better job of calling plays. We have one play we could have run over and over and it could have scored every time. We do have to focus on those more because, in a close game, it could be the difference in going on or going home.”

Fayette will host the neighboring Harrisburg Bulldogs on Friday at 7 p.m. The winner of that game will face the winner of the game between Sweet Springs and South Callaway which will also be contested Friday.
