Yard waste collection in Fayette will resume on Friday, September, 24, and continue on the last Friday of every month. An employee of the City of Fayette will make pickups.
This new arrangement should satisfy those who use the service without placing the burden of paying for it on those utility customers who do not.
Yard waste collection ceased when the city council voted in May to contract with a new garbage collector, RTS Waste Services, LLC. The option for yard waste pickup was not chosen by the council in an effort to keep down the monthly costs. However, a number of citizens have complained that they want the service to continue. Council members chose not to amend the city’s contract with RTS because the extra $2 per month charge would be billed to all households while only a relatively small number would actually use the service.
The council then decided to establish the service in-house. On Thursday, the city announced the new details.
Yard waste collection will be picked up by the city starting at 8 a.m. on the last Friday of every month. All limbs must be bundled and no longer than four feet in length and five inches in diameter. Debris, such as leaves and grass, must be placed in a trash can or similar receptacle. No bags will be picked up since the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) does not allow bags, even paper sacks, to be placed in the city’s compost site.
Those who wish to have yard waste picked up must contact Rebecca at City Hall at (660) 248-5246, before 4:30 p.m. the day before, to be placed on the collection list. All waste must be placed on the curb where trash is normally picked up.
