Bulldogs show fight against top-ranked Tipton in 72-6 loss

Harrisburg knew Friday night would bring one of its toughest tests of the season. The Bulldogs traveled to Tipton for the Cardinals’ homecoming game and faced the defending Class 1 state champion, which entered the night unbeaten and ranked at the top of Class 1.

Tipton ultimately pulled away for a 72-6 victory, but Harrisburg produced a long touchdown against a strong defense, repeatedly rallied multiple defenders to the football, and came out of halftime still playing with energy despite a large deficit.

Head coach Parker Howard had framed the matchup as an opportunity. “There's only one team in the state that gets to play the number one team in the state tonight, and we got a special opportunity.”

Harrisburg’s defense gave Tipton an early stop. The Cardinals were forced to punt on their opening possession, and the Bulldogs took over before Tipton’s defense answered with a stop of its own.

The Cardinals broke through with 9:06 remaining in the first quarter when sophomore Micah Street scored on the ground. The conversion failed. Senior Levi Street followed with a touchdown at 6:36, and Tipton added a successful two-point conversion. Senior Cooper Doss scored again with 2:42 remaining, followed by another two-point conversion, giving the Cardinals a 22-0 lead.

Harrisburg answered with its biggest offensive play of the night. With 1:33 left in the first quarter, junior Hunter Winscott took an inside zone handoff and broke free for an 85-yard touchdown. The two-point attempt was unsuccessful, but the run cut the score to 22-6.

“We ran inside zone to Hunter, and we just busted another big one,” Coach Howard explained.

Tipton took control in the second quarter. Levi Street scored three more times, including a long touchdown run with 5:44 remaining in the half. The Cardinals also turned one of Harrisburg’s interceptions into another scoring opportunity, and Doss caught a touchdown pass with 4:39 left. Tipton carried a 54-6 lead into halftime.

The Cardinals’ defense created pressure throughout the first half and finished the game with four interceptions. Harrisburg also lost yardage on sacks and was hurt by penalties that stalled possessions. Howard said the Bulldogs track penalties, turnovers, and other negative plays and try to keep them below 15 percent of their offensive snaps.

Harrisburg nevertheless came out of halftime with one of its more sustained drives of the night. The Bulldogs mixed runs by juniors Kadyn Weldon and Winscott with short completions, including a first down catch by sophomore Jasper Miller, and moved deep into Tipton territory before the drive ended on downs.

The response was consistent with what Howard has asked of his team throughout a season marked by injuries and a small roster. “We can either let that let the score define us and define who we are and what's happening to us, or we can go do something about it and we can play for our brothers and we can play hard for four quarters of football.”

Tipton added one third-quarter touchdown, a pass to junior Ty Bixler with 1:38 remaining, to make the score 60-6. Junior Alex Millan scored with 8:55 left in the fourth quarter, and junior Jaiden Clutter added the final touchdown with 3:23 remaining. Tipton then took a knee inside the final minute to close out the homecoming victory.

For Harrisburg, sophomore Brody Combs finished 10-for-32 passing for 140 yards with four interceptions. Weldon caught six passes for 77 yards and carried seven times for zero net yards. Winscott finished with 70 net rushing yards on 10 carries, including the 85-yard touchdown, and added one reception for three yards. Rylan Smiley caught one pass for 25 yards, Will Cole had one reception for 20 yards, and Miller caught one pass for 15 yards.

Combs faced frequent pressure, particularly in the first half, but Howard said the sophomore quarterback continues to develop as the offense gains experience.

“He's fearless. He's always ready to come back for the next play, no matter what happens. And he's always he's always very coachable,” Howard said.

The Bulldogs also continued to play with a thin roster. Howard said three players are out for the season, leaving the roster at 19, while junior Tucker Lasley also missed Friday’s game. Howard said the team hoped to have Lasley back the following week.

Defensively, Harrisburg had several plays in which two or three Bulldogs converged on the ball carrier. Howard said that reflects an increased emphasis on reading keys, following guards, and getting all 11 defenders to the football against physical runners.

Even with the final margin, Howard said the Bulldogs showed enough flashes to reinforce his belief that improvement is taking place. Harrisburg had opportunities for additional scores, including passes that narrowly missed or were dropped, but Howard said the next step is converting those opportunities.

“I know Tipton does a really good job of focusing on fundamentals,” Howard said. “I'm not going to change who I am. I'm not going to change who this team is. We're just going to get better at what we do.”

For Howard, the larger goal reaches beyond the remaining games on the schedule.

“This isn't just about football. This is about life. Stuff's going to happen. Negative things are going to happen, but it's always going to be about how we respond to it,” he said.

Tipton improved to 6-0 and extended its winning streak to 17 games. The Cardinals travel to Fayette next week. Harrisburg fell to 1-5 and 0-2 in the Central State 8. The Bulldogs return to the road Friday against South Callaway as they continue working to turn signs of progress into more complete drives, fewer self-inflicted mistakes, and another step forward late in the season.

Harrisburg plays its final home game of the regular season next week against No. 3 Russellville, the Bulldogs’ fourth ranked opponent this season. They close the regular season at Fayette on October 23.
