City announces dates for street repaving

Council expected to vote next week on downtown parking plan

Posted

The City of Fayette announced dates for road closures throughout May and June for upcoming street repaving and utility work projects.

The Fayette city council in October approved a bid by Don Schneiders Excavating for $949,471.58. The project will repave portions of Morrison, Davis, Spring, and Lucky streets, along with four intersections and the downtown square. Intersection work along South Church Street has already been underway.

Morrison and Davis Streets will close from May 18 through 22 for asphalt layover. Streets around the downtown square will close from May 26 through 29 for seal coating and striping.

The project will hold off until school functions are concluded for the year before repaving Lucky Street near the Fayette school district. Work there and along Spring Street is expected to begin in late June. Water line improvements will take place in advance of the repaving project, and the city said it will limit traffic disruptions as much as possible.

The city council is expected to approve a new plan next week for marking parking spaces around the square that could change the traffic flow to one way (see illustration above), counterclockwise, around the square. The plan was included in the council’s packet for last week, but the meeting was canceled due to illness. The plan does not include parallel parking.
