The Central Methodist women’s basketball team split its weekend road trip, earning a decisive 90-66 win over Oklahoma City on Friday before falling 63-45 to Cumberland (Tenn.) on Saturday.
On Friday, the Eagles shot a blistering 50.8 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from 3-point range to overpower Oklahoma City on Halloween. Senior guard Kaelyn Johnson led the way with 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including six 3-pointers, while Maizen Williams added 17 points and four assists. Tayla Robinson came off the bench to score 16, and Nautica Washington contributed 10 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
CMU built a 21-14 lead after the first quarter and blew the game open in the third, outscoring the Stars 32-15 to take a commanding advantage. The Eagles finished with 20 assists to just nine turnovers and matched OCU 40-40 on the boards. They also dominated inside, outscoring the Stars 38-20 in the paint with 39 points coming off the bench.
On Saturday, Central Methodist struggled to find its rhythm against Cumberland. The Eagles shot just 34 percent from the floor and 22.7 percent from beyond the arc in a 63-45 defeat. Tayla Robinson again provided a bright spot with a team-high 12 points off the bench. Williams added seven points, while Washington and Mary Copeland each scored four.
Cumberland held CMU to just seven points in the third quarter and outrebounded the Eagles 41-26. Faith Colston led the Phoenix with six assists, while Ty Buckley, Sydney Schwallie, and Braley Bushman each scored 12 points.
With the weekend split, Central Methodist moved to 2-1 on the season. The Eagles open a four-game home stand, starting on Thursday with a 5 p.m. tilt against area rival Columbia College.
