A total of 1,299 students are enrolled in Howard County public schools for the fall term. Most schools began the new year on Tuesday, August 25. Fayette started yesterday, Tuesday, September 1, due to a delay in storm restoration to its elementary and middle schools.
That total is down 24 students countywide, although numbers fluctuate as students move in and out of districts to start the year.
Fayette’s total of 666 students was an estimate presented to the Board of Education on August 19. Daly Elementary expected 315 students, including 30 in preschool. Clark Middle School anticipated 148 students, with 54 enrolled in sixth grade, 53 in seventh grade, and 41 in eighth grade. Fayette High School expected 203 students for the first day of school, including 59 freshmen, 61 sophomores, 39 juniors, and 49 seniors.
Glasgow Superintendent Stacey Kottman reported 251 students in kindergarten through 12th grade and 12 preschool students. New Franklin Superintendent Benji Dorson reported an enrollment of 358, including 20 in preschool.
Elsewhere in the Advertiser’s coverage area, Harrisburg reported 581 students in kindergarten through high school.
Higbee had 241 students on opening day. The largest class consists of 25 sixth graders. The seventh grade is the smallest class with 10 pupils. Seventy-one students make up the high school, with 28 kids enrolled in preschool.
