Fayette girls win fifth straight game

The Fayette girls jumped out to a double-digit halftime lead on the way to their fifth victory in a row Monday night, handily defeating North Callaway 54-26 at home for Pink Out night.

Fayette turned a four-point lead after one quarter into a 16-point advantage at halftime on the way to the lopsided win.

North Callaway opened the game in man-to-man defense, which Fayette had not seen since the season opener at Marshall, which the Falcons won 57-51.

“I think our girls handled it really well,” said Fayette coach Rachel England after Monday’s win. “When they went into their 2-3 zone, we were able to hit some shots from the outside and attack the rim pretty well.”

North Callaway snuck ahead early with five points in the first three minutes, but Fayette scored eight out of the last nine points to finish the opening period up 10-6. The Falcons dialed it up a few notches in the second quarter thanks to seven points from junior Kennady Vroman, including an early 3-pointer. It would turn out to be a big night for Vroman, who scored a career-high 11 points.

“She is obviously playing so much more confidently, especially after last year being our sixth man. Now she’s a starter for us and playing really strong, really levelheaded, and she knocked down some shots from the outside tonight,” England said.

Vroman’s second-quarter triple was bookended by 3-point shots from sophomore Eastin Hill, fresh off a career-high 20 points last Friday night against Christian Fellowship. She tallied 18 points against North Callaway on Monday.

“I think Eastin is playing very confidently going into her sophomore season,” England explained. “She’s just getting better with every game. She was able to hit shots and attack the rim with confidence. She’s playing a really strong middle of the season for us, and she’s only going to get better.”

Fayette finished with three double-digit scorers. Junior Paige Vroman also totaled 18 points with two third-quarter threes and 8-for-10 shooting from the line.

“Against Christian Fellowship, she did not have the best night offensively. So I knew she was going to get back into the rhythm of things,” said Coach England. “She toughed it out tonight and was able to get to the rim.”

Even with Fayette’s potent offense, it was the Falcons’ defensive pressure and aggressive rebounding that made the most significant difference Monday night. The Falcons created multiple turnovers with their handsy defense and limited North Callaway to one-shot trips while controlling the defensive glass from their zone pressure.

“We were able to switch up a couple of things defensively and threw three different presses at them,” England said. “The problem with zone is I don’t want our girls to get lackadaisical. I still want us to be full of energy, still get up into the passing lanes, and get our hands on the ball a lot. And I think they handled it really well.”

Fayette held North Callaway to single-digit scoring in each of the four quarters. Junior Ivey Tomlinson and sophomore Anna Shryock each finished with nine points to lead the Lady Thunderbirds.

Fayette is now 7-5 overall, having won six out of the last seven games. The Falcons opened Central State 8 action at New Bloomfield (1-7) on Tuesday after the Advertiser went to press. They return home Friday night to host Linn (6-7) for Courtwarming.

“We’re looking for number six tomorrow,” England said Monday night. “We have a legitimate chance to make it six in a row, and then we’ll look toward Linn on Friday for Courtwarming.”

On Monday, the Falcons take on Linn for the second time in three days in the opening-round game of the Harrisburg Tournament. Fayette was seeded fifth behind Linn (fourth) and third-seeded Blair Oaks, whom Fayette handily defeated in the opening round of the tournament a year ago.

Coach England thinks her team was worthy of the third seed, especially after last year’s 52-38 win over Blair Oaks. “It kind of stings, but hopefully we’ll come out with a first-round win. We just need to come out of that week with two wins.”

Fayette tips off against Linn at 7:30 p.m. on Monday on Coach Combs Court. The winner is expected to face top-seeded Centralia (14-1) in the championship semifinals on Wednesday.
