The Fayette Lady Falcons gave up a six-run lead but managed to escape with an 8-7 win over Cairo at home Monday night to improve to 9-7 overall.

Cairo, down its ace pitcher due to injury, drops to 12-3 overall.

With two outs and the game tied in the bottom of the seventh, Fayette sophomore Brooklynn Wies scored the winning run on a wild pitch to end the game with the Falcons on top 8-7.

Fayette led 7-1 until Cairo erupted for five runs in the sixth and one in the top of the seventh to tie the game.

“I think something clicked for them. And in that moment, I think we slipped a little bit,” said Fayette coach Bri Moore following the game.

Fayette ace Skylar Sunderland allowed one earned run and delivered 12 strikeouts while facing many of her summer travel ball teammates in Cairo jerseys.

Falcon seniors Whitley Sunderland and Cayle John, along with sophomores Kennady Vroman and Emma Hilgedick, each recorded two hits. Vroman and Hilgedick each drove in two runs.

Cairo committed five errors early in the game, compared to three for Fayette.

The Falcons traveled to Paris on Tuesday after the Advertiser went to press. They return to CS8 action at home on Thursday against South Callaway.
