Vietnam Veteran George Befort, of Fayette, a two-time Purple Heart recipient, was honored by the Howard County American Legion Post #273 on Monday, August 3, for his tireless efforts to make all counties in Missouri into Purple Heart counties.
Befort’s mission in recent years has been to ensure that all cities and counties throughout the state become designated as Purple Heart entities, therefore making Missouri a Purple Heart state.
The designation affords benefits for Missouri Purple Heart recipients, making them eligible for special license plates and parking privileges. Eligible veterans qualify for free parking in metered spaces, state parks, and public college or university parking lots or garages.
During the presentation, Befort received a resolution from Missouri State Representative Tim Taylor, a declaration from Missouri Lt. Governor David Wasinger, and a plaque from the Howard County American Legion Post #273.
