The Glasgow Yellowjackets walked off in the bottom of the ninth to claim their first victory of the season, 7-6, over Meadville/Linn Co., in front of a home crowd on Thursday.
Tied 4-4 after five innings, Thursday’s game went to extra innings when neither team could drive in a run over the next three frames. Finally, in the top of the ninth, Meadville broke the stalemate, scoring twice with two outs on back-to-back RBI singles against Glasgow’s third pitcher of the night to take a 6-4 lead.
But the Jackets answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, walking off on a tag-up by junior Andrew Cropp on a fly-ball out by sophomore Brody Adams.
The win broke a seven-game stretch of losses, including four one-run decisions, to finally break the Jackets into the win column.
But Glasgow was forced to cut the celebration short after falling to Class 2 Tipton 18-2 on Monday night.
Regardless, the win eases a bit of pressure on the Yellowjackets after a difficult start as they enter the heart of the season.
Glasgow scored seven runs on 13 hits and only walked once. Junior designated hitter Owen Colvin led with an all-star day, going 4-for-5 with a double and three runs scored. He was one of four Jackets to finish with multi-hit games.
Leadoff Bronson Foster went 2-for-2 and drew the team’s only walk. Cropp scored twice and drove in a run with a 2-for-5 performance. Sophomore Tim Monnig drove in two runs on two hits in five at-bats. Adams led the team with a game-high three runs batted in while hitting 2-for-5.
Junior Blake Fuemmeler and junior Lane Monnig added a single each.
But despite strong hitting, the Jackets stranded 10 runners on base.
On the mound, Fuemmeler earned the win after throwing the top of the ninth in relief. He surrendered two unearned runs on two hits without issuing a walk.
Junior Jaden DeMint started on the bump, allowing three runs (2 earned) on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts over the first 34.2 innings. Adams pitched the lion’s share of the game. In 4.1 innings of relief, he allowed just one unearned run on one hit with a walk and two strikeouts.
Glasgow scored first in the bottom of the second when Colvin scored from third on a single by Adams. The RBI came on the third pitch by junior Nathaniel Singleton in a pitching change in relief of starter Quentyn Smith.
The Eagles tied the game in the top of the third on a balk by DeMint. They took the lead in the top of the fourth on a two-RBI single by sophomore Parker Williams with two outs. Meadville made it a 4-1 game with a sacrifice fly by Singleton to score sophomore Leland Grismore, who stole second and third before tagging up and crossing the plate.
The Jackets evened the score in the bottom of the fourth on four hits and an error. Fuemmeler led off with a single, followed by a double by Colvin and an RBI single by Cropp. Colvin then scored on an error on a ground ball by Monnig. Another single by Adams drove in Cropp to tie the game at four runs apiece.
Down by two in the bottom of the ninth, two Meadville errors bookended a single by Colvin to load the bases. A fly ball to center by Monnig scored two runners. Fuemmeler tagged up and scored from third. A center fielder error allowed Monnig to tag up and score from second, while Cropp took advantage of the miscue to land at third. He then scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Adams to clinch the Jackets’ first victory of the season.
The game was the first in a four-game homestand. Following Monday’s loss to Tipton, Glasgow has two more home games this week. On Tuesday, the Jackets were to host rival Higbee (3-8) after the Advertiser had gone to press. On Thursday, Sturgeon (8-4) comes to John Donaldson Field for a 5 p.m. Central Activities Conference game.
Glasgow hits the road next week for back-to-back games. On Tuesday, the Jackets travel to Community for a CAC contest. The following day, they travel to Prairie Home/Bunceton.
