Lewis Library in Glasgow is seeking sealed bids from contractors to perform renovation work at the historic building at 315 Market Street.
The library is seeking four separate bids for interior painting and plaster repair, a new accessible entry walk, a new restroom, and modification of existing electrical services. The library recently raised $100,000 for the renovation.
Bids are due by 3 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30, at City Hall. A pre-bid conference will be held at 2 p.m. on September 17 at the library. Electronic bid sets are available (see link on advertisement on Page 12 of this newspaper).
It is anticipated that separate contracts for the work will be issued for interior plaster repair and painting, the exterior concrete entry sidewalk, interior restroom construction, and modifications to the existing electrical service.
Lewis Library is named for Benjamin Lewis, who became wealthy before the Civil War from hemp and tobacco. It was once the home of Lewis College and is the oldest continuously operating public library building west of the Mississippi and the second oldest public library in Missouri. It is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
The Italian Renaissance-style building was constructed in 1866 for $26,000. The building was deeded by the Lewis family to the citizens of Glasgow on November 4, 1995. It is the second-oldest library in Missouri and the oldest building used exclusively for library purposes west of the Mississippi.
