The Howard County Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) presented its annual Good Citizen Awards to essay winners at a ceremony held on Sunday, Feb. 15.
The Good Citizen Award is presented annually to a senior from one of the three high schools in Glasgow, Fayette, or Harrisburg. Winners are selected based on their dependability, service, leadership, patriotism, and overall good citizenship. The theme this year was “Revolutionary Era Figure.” Each first-place essay was read aloud.
Fayette High School senior Ella Doolin won first place. Her essay will go on to the state competition. Other winners included Jaclyn Johnson from Glasgow and Kourtney Strawn from Harrisburg. All three received an award, a pin, and a cash prize.
Essays were also submitted from St. Mary’s sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students, and Clark Middle School eighth graders. Their theme was “Lunch with a Signer.”
Winners from St. Mary’s sixth-grade class were: first place Renea Monnig, second place Sophia Friedrich, and third place Carleigh Barringhaus. Seventh-grade winners were: first place: Kialey Rey, second place Kinzie Beeler, and third place Silas Kallmeyer. Eighth-grade winners were: first place Jaynie Foster, second place Emma Westhues, and third place Addyson Perry.
Clark Middle School eighth-grade winners were: first place Legacy Baker, second place Brylee Eubanks, and third place Lillyan Blank.
A reception of punch and cookies was enjoyed after the awards ceremony.
