Longtime Howard County treasurer Susan Keyton announced Monday she will not seek a new term. She was first elected in 2006 and won re-election in 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022.
“After thoughtful reflection, I have decided not to file for candidacy for Howard County Treasurer in the upcoming election,” Keyton wrote in a press release issued on Monday. “This was not an easy decision, as I remain deeply committed to serving and supporting our community in meaningful ways. While I will not be on the ballot this cycle, I look forward to continuing my work as an engaged citizen, advocating for the issues that matter most to us all. I am grateful for the encouragement and trust so many of you have shown, and I remain dedicated to making a positive difference — both now and in the future.
“Thank you, Howard County citizens, for all your support over the past 20 years.”
Interested candidates should have some accounting background and good work ethics, Keyton said. "The treasurer is a solitary office working with office holders and levee districts. The person will need knowledge of accounting programs, banking practices, federal programs (would help), and the willingness to self-learn this job with attention to the details."
Other seats up for election in November include Associate Circuit Judge, for which incumbent Mason Gebhardt announced he will file; County Clerk; Presiding Commissioner; Circuit Clerk/Recorder; Collector; and Prosecuting Attorney.
The filing period for countywide offices runs from Tuesday, Feb. 24, through the end of business on Tuesday, March 21. Interested candidates may file for office at the Clerk’s office on the south wing of the courthouse during regular business hours. The election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 4. Current terms expire at midnight on Dec. 31.
