To the Editor:
As a retired Sheriff of Howard County, I strongly support Amendment 6, which reinstates the $3 court fee for guilty pleas in criminal cases. This fee has been a key funding source for the Missouri Sheriff’s Retirement System since 1983, providing financial security for many Sheriff’s who have no other retirement options.
Currently, the system supports 200 retirees and survivors, with 114 active Sheriff’s contributing a portion of their salaries. Without this fee, the retirement fund will go bankrupt in nine years, leaving our Sheriffs without support. Importantly, this fee is only collected from those found guilty, and judges can waive it for those in hardship.
Amendment 6 ensures our court system remains fair without burdening local taxpayers, I urge voters to support this amendment to protect the future of our Sheriffs and their families.
Sincerely,
Randall Yaeger
Retired Sheriff of Howard County
