A three-car crash on Tuesday, June 25, sent five people to the hospital, including a New Franklin teenager, and one was transported by emergency helicopter.

The crash occurred on US 40 in southern Howard County in the Old Franklin bottoms. According to a report by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 19-year-old Heaven-Lee Hundley was southbound in her 2014 Chevrolet Captiva shortly after 10 a.m. when she slowed to make a left turn. Her car was struck from behind by a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck driven by Jediah D. Shields, 45, of Higbee, which forced Hundley’s car into the path of a northbound 2010 Ford Fusion driven by Mark S. Thomann, 72, of Boonville.

The crash caused Hundley’s car to overturn. She was later transported to University Hospital in Columbia by Callaway County Ambulance in serious condition.

Shields also sustained serious injuries and was taken to University Hospital by the Cooper County Ambulance. He was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the patrol.

Carolyn K. Volden, 72, of New Franklin, a passenger in Thomann’s car, was transported by the University of Missouri Hospital Air Care helicopter in serious condition. Mr. Thomann was taken to the hospital by Cooper County Ambulance. Virginia M. Thomann, 73, of Boonville, also a passenger, sustained moderate injuries, according to the report, and was taken to the hospital by Callaway County Ambulance.

Hundley’s Captiva and Thomann’s Fusion were both totaled. The pickup driven by Shields sustained extensive damage.
