In honor of Juneteenth, organizers in Fayette this year are producing a play, “Why We Celebrate Juneteenth.” The play is written, produced and directed by Dr. Elvira Maxwell and answers the question  asked over and over again by our young generation: “Why We Celebrate Juneteenth."

The play takes place during 1984 in Plainview, Texas, where a grandmother and her adoptive grandchildren take on the task of explaining to their congregation why Juneteenth is so important.

After experiencing this three-act educational, mind-opening, soul-searching, spiritual gospel dramatization of a stage play, audiences will take away a greater understanding of “why we celebrate Juneteenth.”

The Juneteenth theater performance will take place at the “Little Theatre” on the Central Methodist University campus in Fayette on Thursday, June 20, from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served afterward. Juneteenth organizers invite everyone in the community to attend this new part of Fayette’s 2024 Juneteenth celebration.
