The Golden Study announced it will no longer host its yearly Halloween Parade around the square. The parade has been a tradition for 70 years.
In a Letter to the Editor on Page 4 of this newspaper, the club says that having fewer members in the club, along with fewer dollars to spend, means it can “no longer host a Halloween contest and parade that we are proud of.”
The club’s annual parade has been a mainstay for generations of costumed youngsters. Kids are divided into groups by age, and the top three places are chosen, often by local sororities from Central Methodist University.
Winners received special prizes. And every child would take home a bag of Halloween goodies.
Recent years even featured Jack-o'-lantern contests.
At the end of the contests, the kids would all be led in a parade around the square.
“It is our hope that another community-minded group will take up the mantle that we are passing down,” the letter states.
