Maryllis Arlene Jackson Sartain (Jackie), age 88, of Columbia, Missouri died peacefully at home, July 11, 2024, in Columbia, MO, surrounded by a family that loved her dearly.
A memorial service will be at 2 pm, Saturday, July 13, 2024, at Memorial Baptist Church, 1634 Paris Road, Columbia, MO.
Jackie was an only child, born October 18, 1935, to Everette Lee Jackson and Elberta Fern Conwell Jackson in her country 2-room house located between Harrisburg and Higbee, Missouri. This was the same house in which her mother, Elberta, was born. She married Marvin Cecil Sartain, Jr. (Dean), on June 13, 1953.
Jackie was on the Harrisburg High School basketball team and went to business college after graduating high school. She spent her early years raising five boys, while using her training in several office manager jobs, which included working for a computer data entry company in Columbia, as office manager for Electric Supply Co. in Kansas City, as a co-owner store manager of their printing and office supply businesses, located on the family farm, in a store-front shop in Fayette and in North Kansas City, and later as office manager for a law firm in Florida, before retiring back to Columbia, Missouri, in the fall of 1998.
While living in Florida, Jackie and Dean became official Turtle Watchers for the Marine Life Center of Juno Beach, FL, where they would check on protected species of turtles that were nesting on Jupiter, Florida beaches. They have both stayed active as members of Memorial Baptist Church in Columbia, since moving back to Columbia in 1998, and Jackie served as a Boone County election judge for many years. Although their children are grown and spread over the country, they have continued to come together, either in person or on family Zoom calls every couple weeks.
Jackie is survived by her husband of 71 years, Dean Sartain of Columbia, MO, and 2 of his sisters, Peggy Bishop of Columbia, MO, and Jan Bentley of Chillicothe, MO, five children, Donal (Jan) Sartain of Cedar Park, TX, Dennis (Sherry) Sartain of New Port Richey, FL, David (Lari) Sartain of Renick, MO, Dwayne (Lisa) Sartain of Omaha, NE and Daryl (Tamara) Sartain of Cedar Park, TX, eleven grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
