A Blue Ash tree located on the grounds of Grace Fellowship Church in rural Howard County was named a State Champion Tree by the Missouri Department of Conservation.
The award was presented Wednesday, October 19, by MCD Forester Angela George. Church congregant Emily Moore identified the tree and notified the conservation department.
When measured on August 19, 2021, the tree had a circumference of 133 inches with a height of 58.75 feet and a spread of 48.95 feet. Those characteristics added up to a score of 204 points, which ties another tree in Sturgeon.
Champion Tree Awards are given to large native trees in Missouri that are scored high by the conservation department. George said the tree is likely more than 100 years old.
