Givens tower to remain in service

The City of Fayette will keep the water tower on Givens Road in operation for now, Public Works Director Danny Dougherty told the Board of Aldermen last week.

The tower had been out of use for the last five years in an effort to curb the amount of TTHMs in the city water supply. It was cleaned, disinfected, and refilled late last month when the primary tower at the city park was shut down after feathers were found in the outflow pipe screen. A boil order went into effect on Friday, February 23. The park tower was then cleaned, disinfected, and refilled.

The city spent $7,000 having both towers cleaned. Interstate Contracting and Coating, Inc., the company that recently cleaned the outside of the water tower at the park, was called in to clean both towers. Crews arrived on Tuesday, February 28, and the boil order was lifted on Friday, March 3.

Costs for how much the city spent on water during the cleaning process were not available as of last week’s city council meeting.

Mr. Dougherty said the park tower was last cleaned in 2019. “It was something that we needed to do anyway,” Dougherty told the council. “They recommend this is something we do every three to five years.”

Mr. Dougherty said the city took about 10 samples around town, all returned negative for contamination.

Trihalomethanes (TTHMs) are a common drinking water contaminant group of organic chemicals, such as chloroform and bromoform, that occur as a result of chlorine treatment. The most often occur in Fayette during the summer months. Should levels rise again as the weather warms, the Givens tower could again be taken out of commission.
