On June 5, 1958, Harold reported for basic training at the NTC Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois. Following basic, he was sent to Memphis, Tennessee, to receive further training as an Aviation Electronics Technician Radar Specialist Class 4. On June 1, 1959, having completed that training, he was assigned to Navy Air Base UTRON SEVEN (VU-7) NAAS Broun Field, Chula Vista, California. His duties there included working in the Electronics Repair Shop to repair and maintain all electronic equipment assigned to VU-7 Squadron. He also served as a full-time Radar and Radio operator, flying missions off the west coast pulling target drones for Navy gunships operating at sea to live fire in the early part of the Vietnam War. A few times, friendly fire from the Navy gun bursts hit close enough to their aircraft that they bounced violently in the air.

Harold was later assigned to NAS Norris Island, San Diego, California, where he continued work in the Electronic Shop with full-time flying assignments as a Radar and Radio operator flying missions. He received his Honorable Discharge from Active Duty on September 12, 1961, and entered the Naval Reserves on September 13, 1961. During his service, he flew more than 200 flight deployments at sea with the U.S. Navy.

For his service, Petty Officer Myers received two Good Conduct Medals; Department of the Navy Certificate for satisfactorily completing Survival Training and Interrogation at the Fleet Airborne Electronics Training Unit Pacific, San Diego, California; and The American Red Cross Training for satisfactorily completing the course in Advanced Survival Swimming with Enemy Evasion tactics in the sea and air extraction rescue.

Harold remains active in veterans affairs and is a local VFW leader, often serving as the honor guard during the Presentations of the Flags at local ceremonies.
