Library Lines - May 2024

May Greetings from the Howard County Library! We hope you are having a wonderful spring, which includes reading a good book! If you are not reading one, we would love for you to visit the library and check one out! We have the latest releases on the new shelf, and they include John Grisham, James Patterson, Ruth Ware, Harlan Coben, Alexander McCall Smith, and Nora Roberts.

We also try to make sure that we have any of the books on hand that have recently been made into movies and are showing in theaters or streaming on one of the networks on television. Please be sure to ask us if you are looking for any book in particular. If we do not have the book in circulation, we can almost always order it for you from our Evergreen system!

Even though summer is still several weeks away, we are already gearing up for our Summer Reading Program. We will offer three sessions again this year: toddlers, elementary-age children, and middle school students (students entering the 6th, 7th or 8th grades). The toddlers will meet on Thursdays beginning July 11 at 10 a.m., and the elementary children will meet on Fridays, beginning July 12 at 11 a.m. Each session will continue through July 26. We will have more information on our website, on Facebook, and in the newspaper.

Our regular programs will continue in May and June with Toddler Time at 10 a.m. on Thursdays and Story Hour at 11 a.m. on Fridays. The first Friday of every month is Block Day when we set out all sorts and sizes of blocks in our Children’s Craft and Activity Center. Our adult book club, “Readers,” will continue to meet on Thursdays at 5 p.m. except for the month of July.

Another one of our services is our genealogy department. Kathy Brady, our resident genealogist, is here on Fridays at 1 p.m. in the Genealogy Room on our lower level. We encourage calling the library ahead of time if you would like to meet with her. She is extremely knowledgeable, has access to a variety of resources and can almost always find results for whatever questions someone may have regarding genealogy, especially in Howard County.

Last but not least, Friends of the Library has a continuous book sale located on our lower level. We are currently offering four items for one dollar, and we will even provide a bag!

So, as you are enjoying spring, we would love for you to come by and take advantage of all we have to offer or just stop in for a visit!
